The decorative panel "Philosophy" was created by Mikhail Alexandrovich Vrubel in 1899.
The panel conveys an allegorical scene depicting a girl. Her naked body is covered with bronze colored material, showing naked breasts. The girl’s red hair is very long and rolls in smooth waves over her bare shoulder below the waist.
Under her bare feet there is a green lawn with dandelions. Right next to her feet lies a small mirror in an openwork metal frame.
A light owl sits on the right side of her legs in the take of the old ruined tree. At the top of this high stump lies the palm of the girl’s left hand, behind which from the stump a new strong process grows, covered with green foliage.
On the right side of the girl, behind her stretches a garden of young and strong trees.
In the center of the background, over the girl’s head, the artist depicted a huge moon, which seems to float out of the foliage of the tops of trees. The sky is cloudless sand color.
In his works, Vrubel prefers to use diagonals, smooth curved lines, the flow of the free rhythm of the elements of the picture.
In his “Philosophy”, the artist presents a certain plan to suppress the search for the future century and today. The panel is almost monochrome, with graphic sophistication and a bewitching form of ornaments containing metaphors.
The connection of the artist’s personality with that era is saturated with complexity and versatility, in contrast to his contemporaries.
Each painting, watercolor, ceramics or decorative panel is richly sparkling with the purity of beauty and aesthetics of colors. Attracting the views of the audience, his creations make you think about the symbolism of images.
Today, the decorative panel “Philosophy” by Mikhail Alexandrovich Vrubel is in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
