Description of the painting Paolo Veronese “Crucifixion”


The picture is not large in size. She entered the Hermitage Museum of Decorative, Applied and Fine Arts in 1772. Until the end, it was believed that this canvas, which is glued to a tree.

On the cross, which raised above the ground, crucify Jesus Christ. One of those involved in the murder grabbed his legs, the other on the right side drives a nail into the palm of his hand, the middle executioner holds his hand, and the fourth drills the side of the cross. The palms are necessarily portrayed openly. On the left side, two riders are watching everything that happens. And on the right, two guilty robbers go to execution in full nudity, which, according to the Gospel narrative, will be crucified next to Christ on both sides.

The picture conveys to its viewer all the excruciating pain that is mixed with unconditional horror. The artist tried to recreate on canvas all those terrible torments that Christ experienced on himself.

Due to the fact that doubts arose that this painting was the work of Paolo Veronese, namely, because of the significant difference between the central part of the painting and the upper sky and with images on the lower, left and right edges, detailed works and studies were carried out.

Against the general background of the x-ray picture, the central part of the picture immediately depicts the nails of Jesus Christ. This part does not give a foundation structure. From all sides it is surrounded by prefixes from the thinnest canvas. The soil and structure are absolutely homogeneous and distinctly developed.

Throughout the center, horizontal lines of black letters written in the Gothic style are clearly formed. This gives reason to assert. that the image of the Crucifixion was applied to parchment, on which there were already inscriptions painted with paint.
