This painting by the master of the Northern Renaissance, painted around 1526, is sometimes called the Russian Cranach due to the fact that it was discovered in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, but then sold to the West.

In the work of Lucas Cranach the Elder, a German Renaissance painter, the biblical story about the temptation of ancestors by the forbidden fruit is repeated about 50 times. The artist’s mythological subjects were predominant during this period, and he used decorative methods of the image. In painting portraits, his brush is becoming more sophisticated and elaborate. He preferred to choose plots in which it would be possible to circumvent the ban of the church and show a naked body, which was very popular with high-ranking customers.

“Adam and Eve” has become an ideal canvas reflecting these trends. Earlier versions of the picture include only participants in the event, at later animals appear, which God created. The composition of all the paintings is identical: The tree of knowledge of good and evil, which the artist is always an apple tree, divides the work in half. In a particular case, these are two boards.

The heroes of the picture are captured in the Garden of Eden at the time of sin. Cranach does not seek anatomical accuracy, but exquisite spiritual sensuality. The elongated images of Adam and Eve clearly stand out against the gloomy background. Their poses can be called scenic, unnatural, movements - emphasized deliberately. With this, Cranach opened the way to mannerism.

The artist draws attention to the erotic beauty of a naked heroine holding an apple in her hand. He uses the classic techniques of recreating space and interpreting human bodies. The canvas is distinguished by figurative calm, compositional balance, measured plasticity of silhouettes, softness of configurations. However, the images are devoid of individuality, originality. This is an impeccable and perfect image of magnificent human bodies, created according to classical models that show us the peak of beauty.
