Description of the painting by Orest Kiprensky “Portrait of D. N. Khvostova”

Dated 1814, materials - canvas, oil, size - 71 by 57.8 cm. It has a vertical arrangement, located in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Russia.

Orest Adamovich is a magnificent master of romanticism and academic style, whose canvases were put on a par with Rembrandt. His style of writing can be clearly seen in the less well-known public portrait of Darya Nikolaevna, wife of Vasily Semenovich Khvostov, the first general of the city of Tomsk, who is dedicated to a separate canvas, made in similar shades.

The color scheme of the picture is quite restrained, but with a few bright accents on a beautiful and feminine face, on crossed arms, drawing attention to a calm and noble pose, and on an orange shawl that gives the image of a little homeliness. Her carrot color in halftone falls on the woman’s delicate cheeks and lips, making the matte skin shine even more, the contrast is enhanced by black hair and the transition from dark to light in the background.

The portrait shows a striking attention to detail, which at first is not so obvious. But it’s worth a look, and now the back of an ornate chair gradually gives out an aristocratic life, an oriental pattern embroidered with silk thread runs along the edge of the cape, a translucent air collar of the dress flies, voluminous curls, the earring plays with flare, eyes sparkle ... All this means serious painstaking work, which the artist spent, trying to convey and capture for future generations a beautiful clean image of a kind mother of a large family, maybe a little tired, but ready to smile charmingly. The gloomy colors of the background do not spoil this impression; on the contrary, they create an unusual lightness, liveliness and make you want to know the story of this woman.
