Tintoretto (real name Jacopo Robusti) was born in Venice, in a dyer family. Actually, his nickname means a little dyer. Throughout his life, the artist remained faithful to the environment of artisans from which he emerged, living a rather modest life. At first the boy studied with Titian, and so quickly began to make progress that the great Titian did not want to educate him further - he was afraid to raise an opponent. Nevertheless, Tintoretto imitated his first teacher for a very long time, especially in terms of color.

The main features of Tintoretto's style are a bold drawing, a peculiar distribution of light and shadow, warm colors, and the dramatic composition emphasized. Sometimes he was too in a hurry in the process of work - and then the canvases were not very successful.

The painting The Birth of John the Baptist belongs to the first period of the artist. The canvas is dedicated to the first day of the life of baby John. According to the Bible, God made Zechariah a priest after he refused to believe in the appearance of his son. Zakharia's doubts are understandable - both he and his wife at the time of the birth of the baby were very old. After the priest inscribed the name John given to the baby, the gift of speech returned to him.

The master in detail and carefully reproduced the fuss that begins in the house after the birth of the baby. The attention of most of the characters is absorbed by the actual newborn - it is held by Mary. From other women, the saint is distinguished only by a thin halo over her head and traditional colors of clothes - scarlet and deep blue. A nurse has leaned over the child, she offers the baby a chest. Mother herself lies in the back of the room on the bed; other women bustle around her. A white-ginger cat sneaks up to the chicken and is about to grab it. Expressive and vivid painting of the artist perfectly conveys the moment. Today, the canvas Birth of John the Baptist is in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum.
