Engraving is one of the variations of the parable of a man who wasted his father's money and found himself in poverty. The story of the appearance of this work goes back to 1495, when Sebastian Brant published a poem on the theme of the gospel parable. After that, the artist Albrecht Durer was inspired by what he read and decided to visualize the story in his work.
A distinctive feature of the engraving was the artist’s modern vision of the protagonist, not like the classic image of the prodigal son from parables. In the work, the creator designated a German village of the 15th century, where grazing pigs are located, next to which a young man is depicted. His image was studied more carefully: the master wanted to convey as much as possible his hopeless position of poverty, to which he came on his own.
The viewer can feel the diversity of emotions that are hidden in the engraving.
Confusion and disappointment are intertwined with resentment and a split in the inner self. Against the background are old withered houses, strewn with holes in the attics and rotting boards on the roofs. The land is full of puddles, and cattle walk nearby. Old wheels are also scattered in the background, and hay lies randomly around. In general, the situation of the engraving creates the impression of a certain hopelessness that can comprehend anyone who unreasonably disposes of what he has. Dürer even managed to convey some emotions of animals around, thanks to which you can understand how sad the position of the young man is.
Religious theme has become one of the main in the works of Albrecht. One of these engravings was the image of the horsemen of the Apocalypse flying over the souls of dead people. The master skillfully visualized his thoughts into images, maintaining a balance of the spiritual and physical. In other words, looking at his work, the viewer was able to feel the idea, which was contained in the most carefully drawn little things.
