Zinaida Serebryakova was born in the village of Neskuchny in the Kharkov province in a family of famous architects and artists Lensere-Benoit. The girl inherited the bright creative talent of the family and, after graduating from high school, goes to an internship in Italy, studying painting at the Academy in Paris.
In 1905, Zinaida married Boris Serebryakov, in a happy marriage with whom she gave birth to four children. The family lives in St. Petersburg, in the summer it is selected in a family estate in Neskuchny. Serebryakov’s house is dominated by harmony, warmth, love, respect and respect for each other.
In these happy years, Zinaida works hard and hard. Its formation as a person and artist, under the influence of a general mood in the creative environment on the search for the ideals of humanism, great and heroic images, resulted in dozens of wonderful paintings filled with kindness and joy, colorful landscapes, bright images of simple peasant women and children.
One of her most famous works is a self portrait behind the toilet, where the artist portrayed herself in front of a mirror, smiling carelessly and combing her hair. At the same time, she writes many compositions and portraits of her children. The two eldest sons Evgeny and Alexander and the younger girls Tata and Katya with cute faces, with infinite love and tenderness performed by a talented mother, illuminate the most ordinary scenes of everyday life - tea drinking on the terrace, cooking dinner, waiting for breakfast, playing the piano. Everything in these paintings breathes the happiness and hospitality of a large, friendly house, and no one knows how tragically their fate will turn out.
The revolution found Serebryakova in Kharkov. In 1919, Zinaida's husband suddenly dies, having contracted typhus, and she remains with her children and an old mother without money and work. In search of a way out, the Serebryakovs left for Petrograd, then Zinaida went to Paris to organize the exhibition. However, soon Soviet Russia lowered the iron curtain, and returning home for the artist became impossible. Relatives and friends with great difficulty manage to transport to Paris two of four children - Sasha and Katya, other children - Eugene and Tatyana Zinaida will see only 36 years later.
Portrait of Zhenya - the eldest son - Zinaida Serebryakova painted in 1917. As if anticipating the speedy separation, the artist portrayed the boy in restrained, even gloomy tones, unusual for her, without focusing on the details of the interior and decor. The boy is depicted in profile and does not look at the viewer. His hands are not busy with anything, he looks thoughtfully and indifferently at the book opened in front of him. Besides the plain white bed in the background, there is nothing more in the picture.
