Description of the painting by Ivan Ivanovich Endogurov “The Beginning of Spring (1885)”

Ivan Endogurov was an incredibly talented Russian painter, graphic artist and watercolorist. He was educated at the Imperial Academy of Arts, and shortly afterwards began to organize his own exhibitions. The artist very subtly and skillfully conveyed the mood of wildlife, portraying it with the help of oil paints and watercolors. He portrayed not only Russian nature, but also Western European nature, treating it with reverence and love. The master tries to penetrate as deeply as possible into the natural world in order to best convey the variability of its state and the depth of colors.

This picture is one of the best works of the artist. She is one of the images of the French magazine Treasures of Russian Painting. Looking at this work, one can note the unusual airiness of the canvas, feel the thrill of an intimate moment when nature as if awakens from a long sleep and reveals itself to the world in full glory. Soft and smooth lines emphasize the lightness of the master’s brush, which reverently and gently conveyed the moment preceding the full flowering and the onset of spring.

The sky seems airy and dynamic, the clouds seem to move into the distance, disappearing in the rays of the golden sun. Endogurov perfectly selected the color palette, trying to convey the colors and shades of the work as accurately as possible. The landscape has incredible lyricism and awakens warm, bright emotions. Due to the fact that the artist traveled very often, he was able to highlight in his canvases all the subtleties of nature that surrounded him in one place or another. One feels a very careful attitude and admiration for the master, who has become one of the best Russian landscape painters of the nineteenth century. His works are stored both in the Tretyakov Gallery and in some museums in Europe.
