Pavel Filonova is one of the brightest and most complex artists of the twentieth century. He was called the "eyewitness of the invisible," the "futurist-conservative." The artist's work increased interest in the avant-garde movements in the USSR.
P. Filonov’s paintings differed in scale, rejection of the obvious side of reality and the desire to reflect the world of visible and invisible phenomena, the origin of life. His art was analytical in nature, trying to prove that form and color are not the only tools for conveying visual thought.
With this approach, the idea of P. Filonov’s images was always difficult to explain and understand. “The First Symphony of Shostakovich” is one of the famous interpretations that reflect the creative principles of the master’s painting. The artist explained the essence of analytical art by depicting the subject, taking into account different points of view, creating an intricate drawing. Metaphorical images of the artist reflect ethereal forms of thought and consciousness. So, in the composition of this work from the depths of "units of action" to the surface of human faces.
The picture was painted in 1935, impressed by what was heard on the radio. P. Filonov was fascinated by the musical form of Shostakovich's symphony. The union of art and music is an area of exceptional expressiveness of the emerging new image of the era of that time. The artist managed to visualize the melody that touched his feelings and mind.
On the canvas in a vortex flow, the "organism" of the state is born. A multi-colored background, like a puzzle, fills the whole space with a shapeless mass. A streamlined face, a mottled viscous “swamp” is likened to the slow passage of time, change and the chaotic chaotic process of evolution of the era.
The faces of people, captured in a variety of perspectives, reflect the musical transitions of musical composition and the public mood of that time. Anxiety and sadness - the faces in the lower part of the composition, the expression on the right is strained, which is emphasized by tightly compressed lips and gloomyly shifted eyebrows. Starting from the darkness and picking up a flute part, a delicate fragile female profile with a slight blush appears slightly away from the center.
The third part of the symphony is tragic, portending irreversible disasters. The top of the picture contains the same type of profiles, doom and impassivity are reflected in the eyes. The builders of the "state-organism" are full of contradictions and doubts, trying to appear calm and enthusiastically rushing for a new life. However, a premonition of disaster does not let them go.
Shostakovich’s First Symphony is a complex combination of meanings and symbols. The prevailing idea of chaos is softened by the through rays and clear blue tones in the faces, giving out ghostly hopes for a possible bright future.
