Domotkanovo of the Tver province was conceived by the artist Serov as the place to create a sunny portrait of a cousin. But the capricious weather liked to surprise suddenly with cloudy days. V. A. Serov brilliantly got out of the situation, having decided at the same time to write another canvas - “Overgrown Pond”.
The landscape of 1888 came out masterfully deep and detailed. "Overgrown pond" we see in silver, olive and swamp colors. The painter intentionally refused bright colors and sharp transitions.
The palette of related tones calms, bewitches and even lulls. The pond is shown as if frozen: its flawless mirror surface was not touched by the slightest ripple. Leaves of brownish water lilies covered islands with the entire body of water. On the shore grow lush alder trees, slightly colored by autumn yellowness.
The painting guesses late summer. The sun is already fading, shyly hiding behind a cloudy veil. Gleams of weak gentle light on the leaves, trunks of trees, in the water make you imbued with love for an abandoned, but very beautiful landscape in its naturalness.
Valentin Serov painted a picture similar to a dream, to a sweet nap. Nature has faded and, having satiated with the hot sun, is preparing to immerse itself in autumn and winter dreams, in order to wake up again in early spring, shake up and, having washed in cool rains, bloom with all its colors.
From the artist’s canvases, mystery and significance blow. As an excellent psychologist, Serov was able to paint the souls of people in their portraits. The same with nature, it is filled with a painter of deep psychologism, an unknown and mysterious life.
The thickened space of the Overgrown Pond immerses the viewer in the atmosphere of a forgotten forest, not involved in the senseless city bustle.
Now magnificent in execution and emotional fullness, the canvas is deservedly exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery.
