The history of the creation of the painting “Ice and the Swan” is shrouded in mystery. The myth of the girl Leda and the swan, the shape of which took Zeus. Once Zeus liked a married girl, but passion captured him so much that he decided to take the form of a swan and take possession of it.

This legend ends with Leda giving birth to a baby from an egg. It is interesting that scientists allegedly found the shell from which, according to legend, the daughter of a swan and Leda was born.

This interesting story inspired many talented artists, writers and sculptors. Paintings by da Vinci, Rubens, even Russian artists such as Kalmakov, Voronkov were created. Michelangelo did not stand aside. Around 1530, he painted the painting “Leda and the Swan” commissioned by a famous duke.

Michelangelo portrayed a girl and a swan on a velvet red sofa. According to his version, Leda is a fair-haired girl with beautiful body shapes. On her head is a small ornament that looks like a crown. On the ice lies a Zeus-swan pressed against it, of a snow-white color. Contrasting colors such as white and red are beautifully interwoven. We see a slightly tense pose of Leda, as well as the spread wings of a swan.

The artist’s contemporaries immediately liked the painting, the most distinguished people of Italy spoke positively about it. From the work of Michelangelo, several copies were made, as well as sculptures. It is copies that have survived to this day, the original, unfortunately, has not been preserved.

The work of Michelangelo is often compared with the works of the same name by other artists. And all agree on one thing, Michelangelo brought to art his original outlook on this myth.

Although the original has not reached our days, you can see copies and sketches in several museums around the world. So, copies of “Ice and Swan” are in the London National Gallery, in the Buonarroti House, in the Uffizi Gallery, in Italy.
