The artist Sergey Ivanov was never indifferent to the tragic events that are associated with the history of Russians. Ivanov expressed his involvement in the experiences of the difficult fate of the people through his own work in painting. Shortly before his death, the artist creates one of his last creations, called the Baskaki. The author never sought to embellish Russian life or depict only grandiose accomplishments and conquests. Therefore, in the picture, he created a true image of ancient Russia, everyday, with all its hardships, oppressing the inhabitants of this great country.

In the picture, the viewer sees how Russian people are forced to pay tribute to the brutal wars of the Tatar-Mongol yoke. Although the Russians fell under the slavery of the Horde, their way of life, as well as their original and persistent disposition, are not crushable. The main character of the canvas is the Baskak, sitting on his black horse. With a haughty expression on his face, he examines the valuable lodge, which the Rusich got with overwork. Other Hordes check the goods on the lists and load them onto the wagon.

In the left corner of the picture, young people - slaves appear before the audience. The artist deliberately attracts attention to them and puts them in the foreground. They are forced to kneel before the invaders, as they faced the impossibility of resistance and helplessness in front of them. Hands taken into slavery are tied behind him with coarse ropes.

Baskak is accompanied by Horde wars. They are ready to kill anyone who is not able to make a contribution to their treasury. In the picture they are depicted as a dark mass in the background.

Ivanov's canvas "Baskaki" was innovative in the art of the beginning of the last century. He was able to portray the dramatic and dramatic nature of the scene using the unusual, conspicuous color scheme of the composition, as well as laconicism in every stroke.
